We like to work as Performance Consultants whenever possible. Elsewhere, we have indicated that only 10 - 20% of training is effective, in terms of providing sustained solutions that address the real problems. Performance consultants are much more likely to be part of this 10-20%.
One of the key reasons for training being ineffective most of the time is that it is frequently seen as a total solution for problems which require more than just training to be remedied. So often, people jump straight from the obvious problem to the obvious solution. The problem with this type of problem-solving is that the obvious problem may only be the tip of the iceberg.
Very often, what we see as the problem is only the surface manifestation of greater complexities. In addition, no real attempt is usually made to determine the underlying causes and possible interventions to address those causes. Little wonder, then, that the obvious solution does little to remedy the situation, and that training gets a bad name.
As Performance Consultants, we partner our clients to do the following: |
identify the gap between desired and actual performance |
determine the underlying causes of the performance gap |
establish which interventions (including training) will best help to address the gap |
carry out the appropriate interventions |
evaluate their effectiveness and make further adjustments as needed |
The generic model below (as used by the International Society for Performance Improvement) highlights our performance consulting approach.
