From Performance Appraisal to Performance Management

Few people look forward to the annual performance appraisal interview. Managers don't like being put in the role of judge. Employees don't like being evaluated. So performance appraisal get done because the system requires it. Complaints like this are often heard because employees' performance is examined in isolation of the business and operating objectives of the organisation. And, too often, performance appraisal is a once-a-year event that neither managers nor employees see as contributing positively to their working relationship - or their performance.

R Rudman, Performance Planning & Review, 1995

Rudman succinctly sums up common mindsets and behaviors which exist because all too often, the system revolves around that appraisal form, and not performance management.

What is performance management? It is the ongoing process/system, whereby managers:

• set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant goals for each team member, that are appropriately related to team goals, and also the organisational mission and strategies

• communicate the goals to staff get their input, and ensure understanding and buy-in

• delegate tasks, based on team members’ skills, commitment and developmental needs

• provide regular, effective coaching and constructive feedback to all team members

• recognise good performance and manage poor performance in a time1y, effective way

• help team members to complete and achieve a Training and Development Plan

provide timely effective performance reviews for all staff, ideally every six months

An effective performance management system is vital to the ongoing success of an organisation. We can help you develop or refine your organisation’s performance management system, and also provide the necessary performance management training.

Advanced HR Solutions has helped various organisations to improve their performance management systems and trained hundreds of managers, executives and staff.
